What is a Changing Robe?

Inhabit robes have all 5-star reviews across Trustpilot and Google Reviews thanks to their waterproof, recycled and stylish design.
The unique pastel colours come in their Serenity Blue and Endeavour robes. If you’re looking for something different without standing out too much, then you will be taken back by the beautiful designs of Inhabit Wear.
Both robe choices offer a waterproof outer-layer, fleece inner-lining, a hood, two-way zipper and they’re made from recycled material.
An eco-friendly company, Inhabit Wear plant three seagrass seeds for every robe purchase (or the equivalent funding).
A nice touch from these super comfy and cosy robes. With different colours, these robes are stylish, allowing you to enjoy the outdoors in confidence.
After reviewing lots of changing robes, I began to design and perfect what I thought was missing, an eco-friendly brand that understands the need for connection with nature, beautiful pastel colours and enough room to change waterside.
Ideal for portability with a lightweight design, also windproof to prevent wind or moisture and ideal for all outdoor lovers.
Inhabit Robes are the best changing robes for swimming and dog-walking with their comfort, warmth and durability.
Inhabit Wear also offer the best women’s changing robes with stunning pastel colours.

Seashell have cemented themselves as a top changing robe brand, their community-driven brand often hosts swimming events.
They are available in blue, black and sand colours. They are now made from recycled materials and boast an incredible 10,000mm waterproof rating.
They deliver exactly what they promise. These robes offer comfort, warmth and are very versatile.
Not as lightweight or easy to carry as some of the other options. Although not as heavy as others, those looking for portable robes may want to continue reading.

- 10,000mm waterproof outer layer

- Velcro cuff and adjusters

- Choice of colours
Fourth Element Tidal Robe
- Recycled materials
- 100% waterproof with tapered seams
- Softest fleece lining
- Peaked hood
- Hidden toggles for hood
- No bag to pack away in
Fourth Element Tidal Robe is one of my favourite changing robes, offering a lightweight and coat-like design.
Fourth Element’s changing robe is the best changing robe for swimming. That’s because it is portable and easy to throw on after swimming.
It’s pricey but it oozes quality. It comes with plenty of detail such as adjustable toggles at the hood, a smaller hood than other brands and a high-quality YKK zip.
The insulated fleece may be lightweight and a comfortable fit but it still offers insulation for outdoor enthusiasts.
- Made from Recycled Polyester
- 10,000mm Waterproof
- Adjustable hood with hidden toggles
- 10k Breathability
Vivida Puffer Changing Robe
- Warmer than most
- Comfortable
- Stylish as coat
- Expensive
I love Vivida as a brand and they offer some of the most unique changing robes with the puffer design.
Beautiful colours, a puffer design and it has a bionic Finish Eco PFC.
Read my full Vivida robe review for details on why I like the Mineral Blue colour and why they have gone into so much detail for users, including their vast pocket options.
It’s roomy and offers lots of space to get changed under. It has wicking absorption to dry quickly inside and is also popular for those looking for a fashionable option.
But here comes their downfall. They are pricey – in-fact, Vivida robes are the most expensive on the market. They are made to last with durability being a priority of theirs but you should only buy this if you are going to get plenty of use out of it.
- 100% Recycled polyester ripstop (50D)
- PFC-free water repellent coating (DWR)
- 80g recycled polyester insulation
- Lightweight robe which packs down small.
Gorilla Robe
- 100% Recycled Materials
- Hot Water Bottle Pouch
- Great Fit
- No Pouch Bag
Gorilla Robes are the best eco-choice for value. In other words, they are available on a budget but are still made from recycled materials.
The UK brand, make their robes in the UK. I don’t feel as though they’re the nicest looking but they certainly do the job.
The pull-over design is different to others and also comes with a large front pocket, perfect for a water bottle.
These Gorilla robes are ideal for swimmers and beach-goers.
- High performance recycled materials
- Double sided zip
- Two side zips
- Draw string hood
- Fleece lined pockets
Osprey Robe
- Incredible value for money
- Well-known surf brand
- Dries quickly
- Only one colour
- If you are happy to pay a bit more money, there are more environmentally friendly robes out there.
Osprey are a great outdoor brand that offer changing robes at a fair price.
They are the best value in the market, with robes well under £100. If you are looking to buy your first changing robe then Osprey is a great choice.
They offer warmth and privacy but aren’t recycled. They also don’t match the quality of Inhabit or Vivida.
For those needing more warmth you may want to look elsewhere, but I love the fit and price of the Osprey option.
FAQs
Changing robes provide warmth, privacy, and protection from the elements. They are ideal for outdoor activities like swimming, surfing, or hiking, helping users stay dry and warm after water-based activities.
Most premium changing robes feature waterproof outer layers, essential for keeping wearers dry in rainy or wet conditions. Brands like Red Original and Dryrobe are known for their high-quality waterproofing.
Changing robes are also windproof, offer insulation and absorb moisture with the wicking inner material.
Key features to look for include waterproofing, a warm fleece lining, adjustable cuffs, and internal and external pockets for storing valuables. The robe’s size should be large enough to allow easy changing underneath it.

It’s essentially used by many as a wearable towel – and it does a great job too.
What is a Dryrobe?
A Dryrobe is the original changing robe. People often wrongly refer to all changing robes as Dryrobes or dry robes.
But this is similar to Hoover, Velcro and Cellotape. Where the leader of the industry is misinterpreted as the product.
Dryrobe is one of many brands, you can find alternatives to Dryrobe with my other full list of the best equivalents.
What to Look for in a Changing Robe
Waterproof
Waterproofing is essential to protect yourself from the rain and wind.
Look for robes with fully waterproof outer shells to ensure you stay dry, especially if you’re swimming or surfing. The Red Original and Dryrobe Advanced both offer high-quality waterproof protection.
2-Way Zips
Two-way zips provide flexibility and ease when changing.
This feature allows you to adjust the robe more easily, ensuring a snug fit while you change in windy or cold conditions. It’s especially useful for those who need extra space for manoeuvring under the robe.
Recycled Materials
Eco-friendly options made from recycled materials reduce environmental impact.
Many top brands, like Vivida and Change Robe, use recycled fabrics to create sustainable, high-performance robes.
Choosing a robe made from recycled materials is a great way to support eco-conscious initiatives while enjoying the benefits of a high-quality garment.
Made to Last
Durability is key for a long-lasting robe.
Look for robes made from tough, weather-resistant materials that can withstand frequent use. A well-built robe will last through many seasons, ensuring you get the most out of your investment.
Colours
Colour choices allow you to personalise your robe.
Brands like Red Original and Dryrobe offer a wide variety of colour options, so you can choose one that suits your style. Whether you prefer bright hues or subtle tones, the choice is yours.
Inner Fleece
An inner fleece layer provides warmth and comfort.
This feature is especially important for cold-water swimmers and surfers. Fleece-lined robes trap heat, helping to retain body warmth after outdoor activities, making them essential for post-swim or surf comfort.
